Composer of the Month
Fall Semester 2025: Nordic Composers
Each month, we explore the life and music of a different composer to better understand the rich variety of styles and cultures in classical and popular music. During the Fall semester, we’ll learn about Jean Sibelius from Finland and Edvard Grieg from Norway—two composers who brought the beauty of Nordic landscapes and folklore into their music. We’ll also take a closer look at modern musicians from Sweden, including pop legends ABBA and electronic artist Avicii, as well as Jónsi from Iceland, whose imaginative soundscapes appear in films like How to Train Your Dragon. Through listening and discussion, students will discover how music expresses identity, preserves history, and reflects the pride of a people and their homeland.
What Are the Nordic Countries?
The Nordic countries are a group of nations in northern Europe. They include Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden. These countries share similar languages, history, and traditions, and they are known for their beautiful landscapes—like mountains, forests, lakes, and coastlines.
Long ago, the Vikings lived in this region. They were strong sailors and explorers who traveled across Europe in long ships. The Viking Age was an important time in Nordic history, and many stories, music, and traditions from that time are still remembered today.
Today, the Nordic countries are peaceful, safe places where people care about nature, education, and helping others. Their music and culture continue to influence the world.
Edvard Grieg (1843-1907)
Edvard Grieg was a Norwegian composer who brought the spirit of Norway to the concert stage. He blended traditional folk melodies and rhythms with classical forms, making music that was both personal and patriotic. His Peer Gynt suites and Piano Concerto in A minor remain some of his most beloved works. Grieg’s music helped introduce the world to the beauty of Norwegian culture and inspired pride in his fellow countrymen.
“I am sure my music has a taste of codfish in it.”
Grieg said this with a twinkle in his eye, referring to the influence of his Norwegian heritage. It highlights how proud he was to include folk elements from Norway in his music.
One of his most famous pieces was the incidental music for the play Peer Gynt which was loosely based on a Norewegian fairy tale. The music is very programatic, meaning it tells a very specific story. You can “see” the story through the music. Learn more about incidental music and program music in our unit on Music Appreciation.
Jean Sibelius (1865-1957)
Jean Sibelius was a Finnish composer whose music played an important role in shaping his country’s national identity. He is best known for his symphonies and tone poems, especially Finlandia, which became a symbol of resistance during times of political unrest. Sibelius drew inspiration from Finnish nature, mythology, and history, creating music that felt deeply connected to his homeland. His powerful, expressive style helped define a uniquely Finnish voice in classical music.

ABBA
ABBA is a world-famous pop group from Sweden, known for their catchy songs, colorful costumes, and unforgettable performances. The group’s name comes from the first letters of its four members: Agnetha, Björn, Benny, and Anni-Frid. They became international stars in the 1970s with hits like Dancing Queen, Mamma Mia, and Take a Chance on Me. ABBA’s music blends strong melodies with rich harmonies and fun rhythms, and it continues to be loved by fans of all ages around the world.

Icelandic Music in Animated Film
Another important Nordic voice in modern music is Jón Þór “Jónsi” Birgisson from Iceland. While students might not know his name, many have heard his music in the How to Train Your Dragon movies. Jónsi helped write some of the songs that give the films their magical, adventurous feeling. He’s known for creating unique sounds, like using a cello bow to play an electric guitar, and for being the lead singer and instrumentalist in the Icelandic band Sigur Rós. His music blends dreamy soundscapes with powerful emotions, showing how imagination and creativity can bring stories to life.
